ISO Issued New Version of ISO 8100-7:2024 Lifts — Part 7: Accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability International Standard
On December 5, 2024, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the new version of the international standard ISO 8100-7:2024 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 7: Accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability, which is the first special general guideline for barrier-free design of elevators in the global elevator industry, and will officially take effect on June 5, 2025. The core contents of this standard include: First, clarify the scope of application of the standard, covering passenger elevators and home elevators in all public buildings, residential buildings, medical and elderly care buildings, applicable to the barrier-free design control of the whole process of elevator design, manufacture, installation and transformation. Second, establish a classification system for elevator barrier-free design. According to the use scenario and the needs of the adapted population, the elevator barrier-free design is divided into three grades: basic grade, general grade and medical grade, and differentiated design requirements are formulated for different grades. Third, refine the mandatory requirements for car barrier-free design, clarify the mandatory standards for the minimum net size of the car, wheelchair turning space, handrail setting, floor anti-skid, and lighting brightness, and formulate special adaptation design guidelines for visually impaired, hearing impaired and physically disabled people. Fourth, standardize the barrier-free design requirements of the control device, clarify the design standards of high and low double-row buttons, Braille signs, voice broadcast, tactile feedback, and emergency call devices, to ensure that disabled people can operate the elevator independently and safely. Fifth, refine the barrier-free design requirements for landing doors and elevator lobbies, clarify the mandatory standards for the minimum size of elevator lobbies, net width of landing doors, setting of call buttons, and sound and light arrival prompts, and standardize the setting and publicity requirements of barrier-free signs. Sixth, add special requirements for age-friendly design, and formulate special design guidelines for elevator operating speed, acceleration and deceleration, leveling accuracy, and emergency rescue according to the use needs of the elderly. Seventh, standardize the inspection and acceptance requirements for barrier-free elevators, formulate standardized specifications for barrier-free performance test, on-site inspection and acceptance process, and improve the qualification criteria. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national standard by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, comprehensively improving the unification level of global elevator barrier-free design.
