On April 22, 2025, the CEN/TC 10 Technical Committee of the European Committee for Standardization officially issued the new EU standard EN 81-20:2025 Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts — Part 20: Lifts for private premises, replacing the old 2014 version, which will officially take effect throughout the EU on October 22, 2025, and is the core compliance basis for the market access of home elevators in the EU. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering all home elevators installed in private residences, including machine-room-less home elevators, screw home elevators, hydraulic home elevators, and traction home elevators, adapting to the safety needs of home elevators with different installation scenarios and different load levels. Second, refine the safety requirements for the design and manufacture of home elevators, formulate special design guidelines for the low-floor, low-speed, private use scenarios of home elevators, and clarify the mandatory standards for mechanical strength, safety factor, and load test of the car, hoistway, door system, drive system, and suspension system. Third, upgrade the safety protection requirements for home elevators, refine the mandatory technical standards for overspeed protection, overload protection, door interlock protection, emergency rescue, and fall protection, and add special requirements for intelligent safety monitoring systems for home elevators. Fourth, add the barrier-free and age-friendly design requirements for home elevators, and formulate special design guidelines for car size, control device, handrail setting, and emergency call according to the use needs of the elderly and disabled people. Fifth, refine the whole process specification for the installation and acceptance of home elevators, clarify the standardized process of quality control, on-site inspection, load test and safety verification during the installation of home elevators, and improve the qualification criteria for delivery and use. Sixth, add the requirements for maintenance and use management of home elevators, and formulate special specifications and guidelines for the daily maintenance, regular inspection and safe use of home elevators. Seventh, standardize the document and identification requirements for home elevators, clarify the preparation requirements for design documents, calculation sheets, test reports and operation manuals of home elevators, and unify the marking guidelines for safety signs and warning signs of home elevators. After its release, the standard will become a mandatory compliance basis for the market access of home elevators in EU countries, comprehensively improving the safe operation level of home elevators in the EU.
