On April 22, 2025, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued the 2025 revised version of ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, replacing the old 2024 version, which is the core mandatory standard for elevator and escalator market access in North America such as the United States and Canada. The core upgrades of this revision for escalators and moving walks include: First, upgrade the safety requirements of steps and pedals, add mandatory functional requirements for step missing detection and pedal fracture monitoring, and clarify the response time and action logic of the detection device. Second, strengthen the safety control of the handrail, add mandatory standards for handrail speed deviation protection and foreign object detection at the handrail entrance, to improve the personal safety protection capability of the escalator. Third, upgrade the safety requirements of the escalator braking system, add the linkage control logic of the service brake and the auxiliary brake, and clarify the test standard and judgment requirements of the braking performance. Fourth, add the technical requirements of the intelligent monitoring system for escalators, and standardize the design and test standards of the remote monitoring, fault early warning and personnel detection systems for escalators. Fifth, refine the safety specifications for escalator maintenance operations, and clarify the safety protection, operation process and emergency disposal requirements of maintenance operations. The standard officially took effect on October 1, 2025, and has been incorporated into national mandatory regulations by various North American countries.
