ISO 8100-1/2:2026 Global Elevator Main Standard Officially Published, Replacing EN 81-20/50 as International Standard
The new version of the standard brings several major technical updates:
1.For the first time, it approves new load-bearing devices other than traditional steel wire ropes, including composite suspension systems such as carbon fiber belts and aramid fiber belts
2.Replaces the original PESSRAL concept with SIL-rated safety circuits, improving the reliability requirements of electrical safety systems
3.Incorporates digital safety risk management requirements for the first time, clarifying the basic specifications for elevator cybersecurity
4.Updates the design requirements for vertically and horizontally moving doors, adding specific measures to prevent finger and hand injuries
5.Improves the technical requirements for automatic emergency release devices after power failure
6.Adds discard criteria for non-steel rope suspension devices and sheaves
7.Corrects errors in traction calculation formulas and updates mechanical and temperature test requirements for safety circuits
This standard applies to traction, positive drive, and hydraulic elevators with rated speeds greater than 0.15 m/s, and only applies to new elevators installed after March 2026. The EU is expected to complete the harmonization of this standard with the Lifts Directive (2014/33/EU) in the third quarter of 2026.
