On March 28, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially issued two core international elevator standards: ISO 8100-1:2026 and ISO 8100-2:2026, which were developed under the leadership of ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee for Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks. They are the core safety and technical specifications of the global elevator industry, which will be adopted by most countries around the world and converted into national standards, and serve as the core technical basis for market access in the EU, ASEAN, Latin America and other regions. Compared with the 2019 version, the 2026 version of the standard has made major technical updates. The core revised contents include: First, updated the mechanical test and temperature test requirements of safety circuits and SIL-rated circuits, and improved the reliability evaluation standard of elevator safety control systems; Second, corrected the error of the traction calculation formula, added the verification method of suspension devices other than steel wire ropes (such as carbon fiber belts, composite steel belts), and clarified the scrap judgment standards of suspension devices and sheaves; Third, revised the relevant clauses of PESSRAL (Electronic Systems Related to Elevator Safety), and improved the technical requirements and test specifications of electronic speed governors and intelligent safety monitoring systems; Fourth, added the relevant technical requirements for cybersecurity and data security of smart elevators, and clarified the relevant specifications for cybersecurity risk assessment, data encryption and access control for IoT elevators, remote monitoring systems and intelligent group control systems; Fifth, added relevant technical clauses for elevator sustainability and energy efficiency assessment, and improved the relevant technical standards for elevator energy-saving design, full life cycle carbon emission accounting, and material recyclability; Sixth, optimized the overall structure of the standard to make it comply with the specification requirements of Part 2 of the ISO/IEC Directives, and improved the compatibility of the standard with the mainstream regional standards such as EN, ASME and JIS. The issuance of this standard provides a unified international technical specification for the design, manufacturing, installation and inspection of the global elevator industry, promotes the coordination and unification of global elevator safety standards, and is of milestone significance for global elevator trade and technological development.
