Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism issued the Mandatory Standard for Barrier-Free Construction of Elevators in Public Buildings on August 5, 2024, which sets mandatory requirements for barrier-free design of elevators in all new and renovated public buildings in Japan. The regulation clarifies that all elevators in public buildings must be equipped with Braille operation buttons, voice announcement systems, wheelchair-adapted car space, and barrier-free emergency call devices, and formulates detailed technical parameters for the use needs of visually impaired, hearing impaired and physically disabled people. The regulation requires that new public buildings must strictly implement this standard from April 1, 2025, and existing public buildings must complete the transformation and upgrading before the end of March 2027. Buildings that do not meet the standard will not pass the building safety acceptance.
