On August 12, 2024, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), together with the Canadian Elevator Association, officially issued the Amendment to the Canadian Elevator and Escalator Safety Regulations, which comprehensively upgraded the requirements for market access, safety design and operation management of elevator products in Canada. The core contents of this revision include: First, fully align with the latest version of ASME A17.1 and ISO 8100 international standards, upgrade the core technical requirements of the Canadian CSA B44 elevator safety standard, and unify the national elevator safety technical specifications of Canada. Second, strengthen the compliance control of imported elevator products, clarify that all elevator products entering the Canadian market must comply with the CSA B44 standard and obtain the certification of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and uncertified products are prohibited from being imported and sold. Third, add network security requirements for intelligent elevators, clarify the safety protection design standards for elevator intelligent control systems, and prevent the risk of network attacks. Fourth, strengthen the requirements for elevator maintenance and emergency rescue, clarifying that elevator maintenance units must carry out routine maintenance once a month, and the entrapment rescue must be handled on site within 30 minutes. Fifth, add requirements for barrier-free transformation of existing elevators, clarifying that existing elevators in public buildings must complete barrier-free transformation before 2030, to adapt to Canadian barrier-free construction regulations. The amendment has a 6-month transition period and was officially implemented on February 12, 2025.
