Australia Issued New Version of AS 1735.1:2025 Lifts, escalators and moving walks — Part 1: Safety code
On May 18, 2025, Standards Australia officially issued the new version of Australian Standard AS 1735.1:2025 Lifts, escalators and moving walks — Part 1: Safety code, replacing the old version of AS 1735.1:2018, which will officially take effect on November 18, 2025. It is the core mandatory safety guideline for the design, manufacture, installation and inspection of elevators, escalators and moving walks in Australia. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, fully align with the latest international standards of the ISO 8100 series, realize the coordination and unification of Australian elevator safety standards with international standards, and improve the international market compatibility of Australian elevator products. Second, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering all types of equipment such as passenger elevators, freight elevators, home elevators, fire elevators, explosion-proof elevators, escalators, and moving walks, and add special safety requirements for barrier-free lifting platforms and stairlifts. Third, upgrade the requirements for core elevator safety components, refine the design, test and verification guidelines for safety gears, speed governors, buffers, door lock devices and suspension devices, and add special technical standards for electronic safety components and non-wire rope suspension devices. Fourth, add elevator cybersecurity and software safety requirements, and formulate special technical standards for cybersecurity protection, functional safety and data security for intelligent elevator control systems, remote monitoring systems and software updates, adapting to the development trend of intelligent elevator technology. Fifth, upgrade the seismic design requirements for elevators, formulate special seismic design, inspection and evaluation guidelines for elevators in seismic zone areas in Australia, and achieve coordination and unification with Australian building seismic standards. Sixth, refine the age-friendly and barrier-free design requirements for elevators, formulate special design guidelines for the use needs of the elderly and disabled people, and achieve coordination and unification with Australian barrier-free building standards. Seventh, standardize the whole process requirements for elevator installation and acceptance, clarify the standardized process of quality control, on-site inspection, load test and safety verification during elevator installation, and improve the qualification criteria for delivery and use. Eighth, refine the elevator maintenance and inspection requirements, formulate standardized specifications for elevator maintenance items, frequency and inspection process, and add special guidelines for safety performance assessment of in-use elevators and transformation of old elevators. After its release, this standard has been adopted by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) as the mandatory technical basis for the Australian Building Code, and has become the core compliance standard for elevator market access in Australia.
