USA Issued New Version of ASME A17.1-2025 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
On March 12, 2025, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued the new version of ASME A17.1-2025 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, replacing the old 2022 version, which will officially take effect on September 12, 2025. It is the core mandatory safety guideline for elevator design, manufacture, installation, inspection and maintenance in the United States, Canada and North America. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering all types of equipment such as passenger elevators, freight elevators, home elevators, fire elevators, explosion-proof elevators, escalators, and moving walks, and add special safety requirements for barrier-free lifting platforms and stairlifts. Second, upgrade the safety requirements of the elevator door system, refine the mandatory standards for mechanical strength, door lock devices, and anti-pinch protection of landing doors and car doors, and add special requirements for real-time monitoring of the operating status of the door system and fault early warning. Third, strengthen the safety protection requirements for escalators, refine the mandatory technical standards for step missing detection, handrail speed monitoring, anti-reverse protection, and personnel fall detection, and add special requirements for the intelligent monitoring system of escalators. Fourth, add elevator cybersecurity and software safety requirements, and formulate special technical standards for cybersecurity protection, functional safety, and data security for elevator intelligent control systems, remote monitoring systems, and software updates. Fifth, upgrade the seismic design requirements for elevators, formulate special seismic design, inspection and evaluation guidelines for elevators in seismic zone areas, and achieve coordination and unification with the latest American building seismic standards. Sixth, refine the elevator maintenance and inspection requirements, clarify the standardized specifications for elevator maintenance items, frequency and inspection process, and add special guidelines for safety performance assessment of in-use elevators and transformation of old elevators. Seventh, add special requirements for elevator emergency rescue, refine the standardized process of elevator entrapment rescue, emergency disposal in fire scenarios, and earthquake emergency operation, and improve the configuration requirements for emergency rescue equipment. After its release, this standard has been adopted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the United States and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) as the core technical basis for elevator safety supervision in North America.
