On March 15, 2025, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) officially issued CSA B44-2025 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, replacing the 2019 version, mandatorily implemented across Canada from October 1, 2025. Core of the new rules: First, energy efficiency standard upgrade, minimum elevator energy efficiency raised from level 3 to level 2, new elevators must be equipped with energy feedback, intelligent standby, standby energy consumption reduced by more than 50%, energy efficiency label mandatory public disclosure; Second, accessibility design upgrade, improve Braille, voice announcement, wheelchair space, emergency call standards, 100% accessibility for public building elevators, existing building renovation completed by 2028; Third, mandatory cybersecurity, smart elevators must comply with cybersecurity standards, prevent hacker attacks, data leakage, remote monitoring requires authorized access; Fourth, old elevator control, annual safety assessment for elevators over 20 years, mandatory renewal for elevators over 30 years, unqualified elevators stopped immediately; Fifth, maintenance specifications, maintenance cycle 15 days, records electronically archived for 8 years, maintenance personnel must hold CSA certification; Sixth, import requirements, imported elevators must pass CSA certification, comply with energy efficiency and safety standards, affix mark. The new rules are mutually recognized with US ASME A17.1 standards, unifying North American elevator market technical threshold.
