EN 81-50:2025 Standard for Elevator Safety Component Design Released, Implemented from September 2025
On February 20, 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) officially issued EN 81-50:2025 European Standard, developed by CEN/TC 10 Elevator Technical Committee. It is a special standard for core safety components in the EU elevator safety standard system, replacing the 2014 version of the old regulation, and was mandatorily implemented in EU member states on September 1, 2025. The core contents of the standard include: First, safety gear design requirements, updating the structural design, material strength and braking performance test standards of progressive safety gears and instantaneous safety gears. The braking deceleration of safety gears must be controlled between 0.2g-1.0g, and the braking distance complies with the specifications; Second, speed governor technical requirements, strengthening the overspeed trigger accuracy and reliability test of speed governors, adding the linkage performance test between speed governors and safety gears, with a linkage response time of ≤ 0.05 seconds; Third, buffer specifications, updating the stroke design, energy absorption performance and durability test standards of hydraulic buffers and spring buffers. Buffers must pass 1000 impact tests without damage; Fourth, door lock device requirements, improving the mechanical strength, electrical interlock and life test standards of landing door locks and car door locks. Door locks must pass 1 million switch tests, with a mechanical strength of ≥ 3000N; Fifth, materials and processes, safety components must be made of high-strength alloy steel, stainless steel and other materials, passing corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and low temperature resistance tests; Sixth, test certification, safety components must be tested and certified by a third-party laboratory recognized by the EU, and can only enter the EU market after affixing the CE mark. The implementation of this standard comprehensively improves the quality and safety level of EU elevator safety components, providing core guarantee for the safety of the whole elevator.
