On August 12, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the revised international standard IEC 61800-7-202:2025 Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems — Part 7-202: Electrical safety requirements for elevator applications, replacing the old 2015 version, which is the core unified guideline in the field of electrical safety of global elevator drive systems. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, comprehensively upgrade the general safety requirements of elevator drive systems, and refine the mandatory technical standards for electrical safety design, overcurrent protection, short circuit protection and overload protection of elevator frequency converters and traction machine drive systems. Second, add the functional safety requirements of the elevator drive system, clarify the safety integrity level (SIL) and performance level (PL) requirements of the drive system, and standardize the design guidelines for drive system fault monitoring, safe shutdown and emergency operation. Third, refine the electromagnetic compatibility requirements of the elevator drive system, and formulate special test standards and limit requirements for the electromagnetic emission and immunity performance of the elevator drive system. Fourth, add the energy efficiency optimization requirements of the elevator drive system, clarify the energy efficiency test method and energy efficiency grade classification standard of the elevator drive system, and promote the development of energy-saving technology of the elevator drive system. Fifth, add the adaptation requirements for renewable energy power supply, and formulate special design and test standards for elevator drive systems powered by renewable energy such as photovoltaics and energy storage. Sixth, standardize the installation and inspection requirements of elevator drive systems, and formulate a standardized process for quality control, on-site inspection and performance test during the installation of drive systems. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national standard by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, comprehensively improving the electrical safety and energy efficiency level of global elevator drive systems.
