IEC Issued Revised Version of IEC 60364-7-729:2025 Electrical installations of buildings — Electrical installations for lifts, escalators and moving walks
On September 22, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the revised international standard IEC 60364-7-729:2025 Electrical installations of buildings — Part 7-729: Electrical installations for lifts, escalators and moving walks, replacing the old 2018 version, which is the core safety standard in the field of global elevator electrical installations. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, comprehensively upgrade the general safety requirements of elevator electrical installations, refine the mandatory technical standards for power supply, grounding, overcurrent protection, short circuit protection and leakage protection of elevator electrical systems, and improve the intrinsic safety level of elevator electrical systems. Second, add special requirements for network security of elevator electrical systems, standardize the technical standards for network security protection, data encryption, access control, and intrusion detection of elevator electrical control systems, to prevent the risk of network attacks on intelligent elevators. Third, refine the design requirements of the elevator emergency power supply system, clarify the mandatory standards for the capacity, switching time, battery life and redundant design of the emergency power supply, to ensure the safe operation of the elevator in extreme scenarios such as power failure and fault. Fourth, add the safety requirements for elevator electrical information transmission, standardize the information transmission protocol, data format and safety verification criteria between the elevator control system and external systems, to prevent external interference and data tampering. Fifth, refine the installation and inspection requirements of elevator electrical installations, and formulate a standardized process for quality control, on-site inspection and performance test during the installation of elevator electrical installations. Sixth, add the adaptation requirements for renewable energy power supply systems, and formulate special design and test standards for elevator electrical systems powered by renewable energy such as photovoltaics and energy storage, to promote the green and low-carbon transformation of the elevator industry. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national standard by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, comprehensively improving the electrical safety level of global elevators.
