On August 12, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the revised international standard IEC 62443-4-2:2025 Industrial-process measurement, control and automation — Cybersecurity — Part 4-2: Security requirements for the product security development lifecycle, adding a special specification for cybersecurity of elevator industrial control systems, which is the world's first special international standard for cybersecurity of elevator control systems. The core contents of this standard revision include: First, it clarifies the full life cycle management requirements for cybersecurity of elevator control systems, covering the cybersecurity control of the whole process of demand definition, design and development, test and verification, deployment and operation, and decommissioning. Second, it standardizes the classification of security capability levels of elevator control systems. According to the use scenarios and risk levels of elevators, the cybersecurity capability of control systems is divided into 4 levels, and the security function requirements corresponding to different levels are clarified. Third, it refines the core security protection requirements of elevator control systems, and formulates mandatory technical standards for core security dimensions such as identity authentication, access control, data encryption, intrusion detection, vulnerability management, and emergency response. Fourth, it clarifies the cybersecurity requirements for elevator remote monitoring and IoT systems, standardizes the technical guidelines for data transmission encryption, cloud security protection, and user privacy protection, to prevent the risk of network attacks and data leakage of intelligent elevators. Fifth, it has formulated the test and verification standards for cybersecurity of elevator control systems, and clarified the process, methods and judgment criteria of security function test, penetration test and vulnerability scan. Sixth, it standardizes the cybersecurity management requirements in the elevator operation and maintenance link, and formulates special safety operation specifications for scenarios such as remote operation and maintenance, firmware update, and system upgrade. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a mandatory industry specification by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China and the United States, comprehensively improving the cybersecurity protection level of global intelligent elevators.
