IEC Issued International Standard for Fire Safety of Elevator Electrical Equipment
On June 12, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the revised international standard IEC 60364-7-729:2025 Electrical installations of buildings — Part 7-729: Electrical installations for lifts, escalators and moving walks, which comprehensively standardized and upgraded the fire safety design requirements of elevator electrical equipment. The core contents of this standard revision include: First, it refines the fire protection design requirements of elevator electrical equipment, clarifies the mandatory technical standards for the flame retardant grade and fire resistance limit of elevator electrical equipment, and formulates special fire protection design specifications for elevator control cabinets, drive systems and wiring systems. Second, it standardizes the design and installation requirements of elevator electrical fire protection devices, clarifies the mandatory configuration standards for overload protection, short circuit protection, leakage protection and overheat protection, to prevent the risk of electrical fire. Third, it adds the emergency control requirements of elevators in fire scenarios, clarifies the control logic of elevator forced landing, door opening and power off in fire state, to ensure the safe evacuation of personnel. Fourth, it has formulated a unified test method and judgment standard for the fire performance of elevator electrical equipment, and clarified the process and criteria of laboratory testing and on-site testing. Fifth, it refines the fire protection design requirements of elevator hoistways and machine rooms, and standardizes the layout, fire isolation, ventilation and heat dissipation design standards of electrical equipment. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national mandatory standard by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China and the United States, and has become the core compliance guideline for the electrical fire protection design of elevators worldwide.
