On March 15, 2024, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued ASME A17.1-2024 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, replacing the old 2021 version, which is the core mandatory standard for elevator market access in North America such as the United States and Canada. The core contents of this standard revision include: First, add network security and data protection requirements for intelligent elevators, and clarify the safety protection design standards for elevator control systems. Second, upgrade the safety requirements of the elevator door system, and add mandatory requirements for anti-pinch protection and fault monitoring of the door system. Third, refine the safety specifications for elevator maintenance operations, and clarify the safety protection and operation process requirements for maintenance operations. Fourth, add technical requirements for non-wire rope suspended elevators, and standardize the design and test standards of new suspension systems. Fifth, strengthen the seismic design requirements of elevators, and formulate special seismic design specifications for earthquake-prone areas. The standard officially took effect on January 1, 2025, and has been incorporated into national mandatory regulations by various North American countries.
