The European Commission officially released the Elevator Safety Regulations (2024 Revision) on March 12, 2024. This revision is the largest adjustment to the EU's elevator safety regulations in the past 10 years, with three new mandatory requirements at the core: first, all elevators in new public buildings must meet the full-process barrier-free design specifications to adapt to the needs of the disabled and the elderly; second, in-use elevators must complete the upgrade of the emergency two-way communication system before the end of 2027 to realize direct connection with local rescue agencies; third, new requirements for digital traceability of the entire life cycle of elevators are added, clarifying the main responsible parties in the whole process of elevator design, installation and maintenance. The regulation will officially take effect in 27 EU member states on January 1, 2026, and member states need to complete the implementation of supporting local rules during the transition period.
