On August 30, 2025, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China officially issued the national standard GB/T 24804-2025 Code for the Improvement of Safety of Existing Lifts, replacing the old version of GB/T 24804-2023, which will be officially implemented on March 1, 2026. This standard is the core basic standard in the field of safety upgrading and transformation of old elevators in China. The core upgrade contents of this revision include: First, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering all in-use passenger elevators, freight elevators, home elevators, escalators and moving walks, adapting to the safety upgrade needs of in-use elevators with different service lives and different original design standards. Second, establish a safety risk classification system for in-use elevators. According to the service life, equipment status, fault frequency and safety performance of the elevator, the in-use elevators are divided into 5 risk levels, and differentiated safety upgrade schemes are formulated for different risk levels. Third, refine the technical requirements for safety upgrading of in-use elevators, and formulate graded safety upgrading technical standards for core components such as door system, braking system, safety protection device, emergency rescue system, electrical control system and suspension system, and clarify the minimum safety requirements and recommended upgrading requirements. Fourth, add technical specifications for intelligent upgrading of in-use elevators, clarify the upgrading requirements and technical standards of elevator remote monitoring, fault early warning, intelligent emergency rescue, and Internet of Things systems, to promote the digital transformation of old elevators. Fifth, add the requirements for age-friendly and barrier-free upgrading of in-use elevators, and refine the technical standards for barrier-free transformation and age-friendly transformation of old elevators, to adapt to the development trend of population aging. Sixth, add technical specifications for energy-saving upgrading of in-use elevators, clarify the technical requirements and energy efficiency evaluation standards for energy-saving transformation of old elevators, and promote the green and low-carbon transformation of the elevator industry. Seventh, standardize the inspection and acceptance requirements for safety upgrading of in-use elevators, and formulate the standardized process and qualification criteria for on-site inspection, performance test and safety verification after safety upgrading. The release of this standard provides a unified technical basis for the safety upgrading, transformation and renewal of in-use elevators nationwide, and comprehensively improves the safe operation level of in-use elevators in China.
