Japan's JIS A 4301:2025 Elevator Safety Standard Revised and Published, Strengthening Seismic Safety Requirements
JIS A 4301:2025 is the core safety standard for Japan's elevator industry, and this revision is the first comprehensive revision since 2016. The main changes include:
1) Updated ground motion parameters, adopting the 2024 Japan Seismic Ground Motion Zoning Map;
2) Improved seismic design requirements for elevator structures, especially for elevators in super high-rise buildings;
3) Perfected the requirements for elevator earthquake emergency operation systems, ensuring that elevators can automatically stop at the nearest floor and open doors to evacuate passengers after an earthquake;
4) Added procedures for elevator inspection and resumption of operation after earthquakes;
5) Strengthened elevator maintenance and upkeep requirements.
The publication of this standard will further improve the seismic safety level of elevators in Japan and reduce damage to elevators and casualties caused by earthquakes.
