Illinois officially issued this amendment to the Elevator Safety Rules in June 2025, based on analysis of elevator accidents over the past five years, which found that door lock failures are one of the main causes of elevator falls and casualties. The new regulation requires:

1) Door lock monitoring systems must be able to detect the locked status of each landing door;

2) If any landing door is not properly locked, the elevator will not operate;

3) The system must be able to record door lock fault information and issue an alarm;

4) Retrofit work must be completed by professional companies holding Illinois elevator licenses;

5) An acceptance report must be submitted to the State Fire Marshal after completion of the retrofit.

It is estimated that approximately 120,000 elevators in Illinois will require this retrofit.
