IEC Issued International Standard for Elevator Emergency Power Supply System
On February 18, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the revised international standard IEC 60364-7-729:2025 Electrical installations of buildings — Part 7-729: Electrical installations for lifts, escalators and moving walks, which comprehensively standardized and upgraded the design, installation and inspection requirements of elevator emergency power supply systems. The core contents of this standard revision include: First, refine the design specifications of the elevator emergency power supply system, clarify the mandatory technical requirements for the capacity configuration, switching time and power supply duration of the elevator emergency power supply, and stipulate that the elevator emergency power supply must meet the power supply requirements of the car emergency lighting, emergency call system and car leveling operation, with the emergency power supply duration of no less than 1 hour. Second, clarify the types and applicable scenarios of elevator emergency power supply systems, and formulate differentiated emergency power supply design standards for different building types, elevator quantities and use scenarios. Third, add the reliability test requirements of the emergency power supply system, clarify the regular test process and judgment standards of the emergency power supply, to ensure that the emergency power supply can be started normally in emergency scenarios such as power failure. Fourth, standardize the linkage design requirements of the emergency power supply system and the elevator control system, clarify the control logic of the elevator's automatic leveling and door opening in the event of power failure, to ensure the safe evacuation of trapped personnel. Fifth, strengthen the insulation protection, overload protection and short-circuit protection requirements of the emergency power supply system, and improve the electrical safety performance of the emergency power supply system. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national mandatory standard by many countries and regions around the world, and has become the core criterion for the design of elevator emergency power supply systems worldwide.
