On February 23, 2026, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued ASME A17.1-2025 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, which was developed under the leadership of the ASME A17 Elevator and Escalator Committee. It is an American National Standard approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and is widely adopted by North American countries such as Canada and Mexico. It is the core safety technical regulation of the elevator industry in North America. Compared with the 2022 version, the 2025 version of the standard has made a number of important revisions. The core contents include: First, it has improved the relevant safety specifications for smart elevators and IoT elevators, added the design and test requirements for elevator remote monitoring systems, intelligent fault diagnosis systems, and remote emergency rescue systems, and clarified the relevant technical standards for the network security of elevator control systems; Second, updated the relevant technical clauses of elevator suspension devices, added the design, test, inspection and scrap judgment standards of non-metallic suspension media (such as carbon fiber composite belts), and improved the fatigue life evaluation specification of steel wire rope suspension systems; Third, revised the relevant requirements for elevator maintenance and inspection, optimized the items and cycle of regular inspection of in-use elevators, added the technical specification for safety assessment of old elevators, and clarified the judgment standards and compliance requirements for major elevator renovation and maintenance; Fourth, improved the safety protection requirements for escalators and moving walks, added relevant technical standards for personnel fall detection, foreign object intrusion detection, and anti-reverse protection, and strengthened the safety monitoring requirements for escalators in public places; Fifth, added relevant specifications for elevator sustainability and energy efficiency, clarified the evaluation method and test standard of elevator energy efficiency grade, improved the technical requirements for elevator energy-saving transformation, and complied with the relevant policy requirements of green building and carbon neutrality in the United States; Sixth, optimized the relevant technical specifications of barrier-free elevators, updated the elevator design requirements for the disabled and the elderly, and improved the relevant standards of car operation panels, voice prompts and barrier-free access. The issuance of this standard has further improved the elevator safety technical system in North America, provided a clear standard guideline for technological innovation and safety management in the elevator industry, and improved the compatibility with ISO international elevator standards, promoting the coordinated development of global elevator safety standards.
