ISO Issued International Standard for Carbon Footprint Accounting of Elevators
On February 25, 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the international standard ISO/TS 8100-30:2026 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 30: Methods and requirements for whole life cycle carbon footprint accounting, which is the world's first special international standard for the whole life cycle carbon footprint accounting of elevators. The core contents of the standard include: First, clarify the scope of application of the standard, covering the whole life cycle carbon footprint accounting of various vertical transportation equipment such as passenger elevators, freight elevators, home elevators, escalators and moving walks, and is applicable to scenarios such as green design, low-carbon manufacturing, carbon label certification, and carbon emission trading of elevator products. Second, it has established a framework for the whole life cycle carbon footprint accounting of elevators, clarifying that the accounting boundary covers 5 stages: raw material mining and production, product manufacturing, transportation and installation, operation and maintenance, transformation and scrapping, and unifies the boundary and scope of global elevator carbon footprint accounting. Third, it standardizes the accounting method of elevator carbon footprint, adopts the life cycle assessment (LCA) method, clarifies the calculation model, data collection requirements, and emission factor selection criteria for carbon emission accounting, to ensure the accuracy, consistency and comparability of accounting results. Fourth, it refines the requirements for carbon emission accounting at each stage, and formulates special rules and data specifications for carbon emission accounting in the raw material stage, manufacturing stage, transportation and installation stage, operation and maintenance stage, and scrapping stage. Fifth, it clarifies the document management and reporting requirements for elevator carbon footprint accounting, standardizes the preparation content, format and disclosure requirements of the carbon footprint accounting report, to ensure that the accounting process is traceable and verifiable. Sixth, it has formulated the classification standard of elevator carbon footprint grades, and divides elevator products into 5 carbon efficiency grades according to the whole life cycle carbon emission intensity, providing a unified basis for the green and low-carbon certification of elevator products. After its release, the standard has been adopted as an industry technical specification by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of the global elevator industry.
