On February 12, 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the technical specification ISO/TS 8102-21:2026 Electrical requirements for lifts, escalators and moving walks — Part 21: On-site and off-site software updates, which will officially take effect on August 12, 2026. It is the first special general technical specification for software update management in the global elevator industry. The core contents of this technical specification include: First, clarify the scope of application of the specification, covering all elevators, escalators and moving walks equipped with electronic control systems that can be updated with software, applicable to the whole process of on-site update, remote update and full life cycle management of software. Second, establish a software update safety management system, clarifying the basic principles, risk assessment, safety verification, approval process and traceability management core framework of software update. Third, refine the functional safety requirements for software updates, clarifying that software updates must not reduce the safety function level of the elevator, must ensure that the safety integrity level (SIL) meets the original design requirements, and formulate a standardized process for risk assessment, function verification and fault test before software update. Fourth, add cybersecurity requirements for remote software updates. For remote update scenarios, formulate special technical standards for identity authentication, data encryption, access control, tamper prevention, and malicious code intrusion prevention, and clarify the necessary security protection mechanisms for remote updates. Fifth, standardize the process management requirements for software updates, clarify the whole process specification of software version management, update approval, on-site implementation, verification and confirmation, and record archiving, requiring that all software updates must establish a complete traceable file with a retention period of no less than the whole life cycle of the equipment. Sixth, formulate emergency disposal requirements for software updates, clarify the emergency rollback mechanism, fault disposal process, and safe shutdown protection guidelines after software update failure, to ensure the safety of equipment and personnel during the update process. Seventh, standardize the requirements for software update documents and personnel qualifications, clarify the preparation requirements and content specifications of software update documents, and formulate the competency qualification, training and assessment management guidelines for software update implementation personnel. After its release, this technical specification has been adopted as the technical basis for product certification by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, filling the standard gap in the safety management of software updates in the global elevator industry.
