On February 11, 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the international standard ISO/TS 8102-21:2026 Electrical requirements for lifts, escalators and moving walks — Part 21: On-site and off-site software updates, which is the world's first special international standard for software updates of elevator equipment. The core contents of the standard include: First, it clarifies the whole process management requirements for software updates of elevator equipment, covering the whole process of update scheme design, risk assessment, test verification, implementation and deployment, effect confirmation, and document archiving. Second, it standardizes the security requirements for remote software updates, clarifies the mandatory technical standards for identity authentication, encrypted transmission, access control, tamper prevention, and breakpoint resume, to prevent the risk of network attacks and data leakage. Third, it refines the risk classification management requirements for software updates. According to the impact of the update content on the safety performance of the elevator, the update is divided into three grades: major, important and general, and differentiated approval and implementation processes are formulated. Fourth, it clarifies the test and verification requirements for software updates, and standardizes the process, methods and judgment criteria of laboratory testing and on-site testing, to ensure that the safety performance of the elevator equipment after the update meets the standard requirements. Fifth, it standardizes the document management requirements for software updates, clarifies the preparation and archiving requirements for update schemes, test reports, implementation records, and version management, and the documents must be kept until the equipment is scrapped. After its release, the standard has been adopted as an industry technical specification by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China and the United States, filling the gap in the global safety standards for elevator software updates.
