On July 22, 2025, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued the 2025 revised version of ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, which comprehensively upgraded the safety requirements for home elevators, and will officially take effect on January 1, 2026. The core upgrades of this revision for home elevators include: First, relax the core parameter limits of home elevators, the upper limit of rated speed is increased from 0.4m/s to 0.63m/s, and the maximum lifting height is increased from no more than 12m to no more than 18m, to adapt to the use needs of American home scenarios. Second, strengthen the safety requirements of the home elevator door system, clarify that the car door must pass the 1000N mechanical strength test, and add mandatory requirements for anti-pinch protection and fault monitoring of the door system. Third, upgrade the requirements for safety protection devices of home elevators, add mandatory standards for overspeed protection, overload protection and rope break protection, to improve the safety performance of home elevators. Fourth, add emergency rescue requirements for home elevators, clarifying that the emergency call system must have a two-way voice call function, and must be linked to a 24-hour on-duty center. Fifth, refine the installation and inspection requirements of home elevators, and clarify the standardized process and judgment standards for the installation, commissioning and acceptance of home elevators. After the standard takes effect, it has been incorporated into national mandatory regulations by North American countries such as the United States and Canada.
