On July 12, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the revised international standard IEC 60364-7-729:2025 Electrical installations of buildings — Part 7-729: Electrical installations for lifts, escalators and moving walks, which comprehensively standardized and upgraded the environmental adaptability design requirements of elevator electrical equipment. The core contents of this standard revision include: First, it refines the design requirements of elevator electrical equipment in different environmental scenarios, and formulates differentiated mandatory technical standards for electrical equipment selection, protection level, and material performance for special use scenarios such as high temperature, high humidity, high cold, high altitude, coastal high salt spray, and desert with much sand and dust. Second, it standardizes the test methods for the environmental adaptability of elevator electrical equipment, and clarifies the process, equipment and judgment criteria of high and low temperature cycle test, damp heat test, salt spray test, sand and dust test, and low pressure test. Third, it upgrades the protection level requirements of elevator electrical equipment, and clarifies the minimum protection level standards for different environmental scenarios. The protection level of electrical equipment in coastal high salt spray scenarios is not less than IP65, and that in desert with much sand and dust scenarios is not less than IP54. Fourth, it adds the reliability test requirements of elevator electrical equipment in extreme environments, and clarifies the continuous operation test standards and performance requirements of the equipment in extreme environments. Fifth, it refines the installation, operation and maintenance requirements of elevator electrical equipment, and formulates special installation specifications and regular maintenance requirements for different environmental scenarios. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national mandatory standard by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China and the United States, and has become the core compliance guideline for elevator electrical design in special scenarios worldwide.
