IEC Issued New Version of IEC 60204-32:2025 Safety of electrical equipment for lifts International Standard
On July 15, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially issued the new version of the international standard IEC 60204-32:2025 Safety of machinery — Electrical equipment of machines — Part 32: Particular requirements for lifts and escalators, replacing the old 2016 version, which will officially take effect on January 15, 2026, and is the core general guideline in the field of design, manufacture and inspection of global elevator electrical equipment. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, fully align with the latest IEC general electrical safety standards, realize the coordination and unification of elevator electrical equipment standards with the global electrical safety system, and eliminate technical trade barriers between different countries and regions. Second, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering electrical equipment of all types of elevators such as passenger elevators, freight elevators, home elevators, escalators, moving walks, explosion-proof elevators, and fire-fighting elevators, adapting to the needs of elevator electrical systems with different voltage levels and different use scenarios. Third, refine the design safety requirements for elevator electrical equipment, formulate special design guidelines for elevator control cabinets, drive systems, lighting systems, emergency power supplies, and safety circuits, and clarify the mandatory standards for the protection level, insulation performance, and weather resistance of electrical equipment. Fourth, upgrade the electrical safety protection requirements for elevators, refine the mandatory technical standards for overcurrent protection, short circuit protection, overload protection, leakage protection and grounding protection, and add special requirements for electrical fire prevention and arc fault monitoring. Fifth, add the functional safety requirements for elevator electrical systems, clarify the safety integrity level (SIL) requirements for electrical safety circuits, electronic safety components, and intelligent control systems, and standardize the design guidelines for electrical system fault monitoring, safe shutdown, and emergency operation. Sixth, add the adaptation requirements for renewable energy power supply, and formulate special design and test standards for elevator electrical systems powered by renewable energy such as photovoltaics and energy storage. Seventh, refine the installation and inspection specifications for elevator electrical equipment, clarify the standardized process of quality control, on-site wiring, insulation test and function verification during the installation of electrical equipment, and improve the qualification criteria for the delivery and use of electrical equipment. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national standard by more than 100 countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, comprehensively improving the safe operation level of global elevator electrical equipment.
