On September 5, 2024, the Colombian National Institute of Standards and Technology (ICONTEC), together with the Ministry of Labor of Colombia, officially issued the New Regulations on Safety Management of Elevators and Escalators, which standardized and upgraded the whole process of access, import and operation of elevator products in the Colombian market. The core contents include: First, it is clarified that all complete elevator machines and core safety components entering the Colombian market must obtain mandatory ICONTEC certification, and uncertified products are prohibited from being imported and sold. Second, tighten the inspection at import ports. The customs must conduct 100% verification of the ICONTEC certificate, certificate of origin and type test report of imported elevators, and products with inconsistent certificates will be directly returned. Third, strengthen the annual inspection requirements for in-use elevators. All in-use elevators must carry out an ICONTEC standard compliance inspection once a year, and elevators that fail to meet the standards must be shut down for rectification immediately. Fourth, it is clarified that elevator maintenance units must obtain the official qualification license of Colombia, and carry out at least one routine maintenance every month. Fifth, upgrade the emergency rescue requirements, clarifying that the elevator entrapment rescue must be handled on site within 30 minutes. The new regulation has a 6-month transition period and was officially implemented on March 5, 2025.
