On July 10, 2024, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), together with the Department of Labour of South Africa, officially issued the New Regulations on Safety Management of Elevators and Escalators, which comprehensively standardized the market access, safe operation and maintenance management of elevator products in the South African market. The core contents include: First, it is clarified that all complete elevator machines and core safety components entering the South African market must obtain mandatory SABS certification, and uncertified products are prohibited from being imported, sold and used. Second, strengthen the elevator maintenance management requirements, clarifying that elevator maintenance units must obtain the official qualification license of South Africa, carry out at least one routine maintenance every month, and keep maintenance records for at least 3 years. Third, upgrade the emergency rescue requirements, clarifying that the elevator entrapment rescue must be handled on site within 30 minutes, and non-compliant units will face fines and license revocation. Fourth, mandatorily implement the annual inspection system for in-use elevators. All in-use elevators must carry out a SABS standard compliance inspection once a year, and elevators that fail the inspection must be shut down for rectification immediately. The new regulation has a 6-month transition period and was officially implemented on January 10, 2025.
