On February 14, 2024, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the United States officially issued the new version of Safety Operation Specifications for Elevator and Escalator Maintenance Operations, which comprehensively revised the personnel safety protection, operation process, emergency disposal and other contents of elevator maintenance operations in the United States. The core upgrades of this specification include: first, clarifying the mandatory protection standards for maintenance personnel working at heights, requiring that double-hook anti-falling safety equipment must be equipped for working at heights above 2 meters, and adding mandatory requirements for edge protection of the working surface; second, strengthening the power-off locking and listing warning system for maintenance operations, clarifying the mandatory requirements for two-person operations, and prohibiting single-person maintenance operations in elevator hoistways; third, adding the safety operation process for elevator door system maintenance operations, and clarifying the step-by-step operation specifications and risk prevention and control requirements for car door and landing door maintenance; fourth, strengthening the pre-job training and qualification audit requirements for maintenance personnel, and clarifying the class hours and assessment standards for annual safety training. This specification was officially implemented on August 14, 2024, and is applicable to all maintenance operation scenarios of elevators and escalators in the United States.
