On March 25, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially issued ISO 18738:2026 International Standard for Safety Requirements and Test Methods for Ultra-high Speed Elevators, developed under the leadership of ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee for Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks. It is the world's first special international safety standard for ultra-high speed elevators (rated speed ≥ 8.0m/s), and was officially implemented on August 1, 2026. The core contents of the standard include: First, scope of application, clearly applicable to ultra-high speed traction elevators with rated speed of 8.0m/s-20.0m/s, covering mainstream ultra-high speed elevator products in super high-rise buildings around the world; Second, structural safety requirements, ultra-high speed elevator shafts, cars, guide rails and traction systems must meet high-strength seismic and wind vibration resistance design requirements, and the car structural strength must pass 1.5 times the rated load impact test; Third, air pressure regulation and human ear pressure balance, the shaft air pressure changes drastically during ultra-high speed elevator operation. The standard mandates the installation of an intelligent air pressure regulation system, with the air pressure change rate in the car ≤ 200Pa/s, to avoid discomfort such as tinnitus and earache for passengers. The air pressure regulation performance must be verified by a third-party laboratory; Fourth, safety protection devices, ultra-high speed elevators must be equipped with multiple safety devices such as double safety gears, double braking systems, overspeed protection, earthquake protection and fire protection, with a response time of ≤ 0.1 seconds; Fifth, emergency rescue requirements, ultra-high speed elevators must be equipped with independent emergency rescue passages, emergency communication systems and emergency leveling devices. Rescue personnel can arrive for rescue within 30 minutes after being trapped; Sixth, test methods, clarify the standard procedures and judgment indicators for ultra-high speed elevator safety performance test, air pressure test, noise test and vibration test, and the test data must be mutually recognized worldwide. The release of this standard fills the gap in the world's special safety standards for ultra-high speed elevators, providing a unified international specification for the design, manufacturing and inspection of super high-rise building elevators.
