On June 18, 2025, the CEN/TC 10 Technical Committee of the European Committee for Standardization officially issued the new EU standard EN 81-77:2025 Lifts — Seismic design requirements for lifts, replacing the old 2006 version, which will officially take effect throughout the EU on December 18, 2025, and is the core compliance basis for seismic design and market access of elevators in the EU. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering all types of elevators such as passenger elevators, freight elevators, home elevators, escalators and moving walks, adapting to the seismic design needs of elevators in different seismic intensity areas and different building types. Second, refine the classification standard for elevator seismic design. According to the European seismic intensity zoning, the elevator seismic design is divided into 4 grades, and differentiated mandatory standards for design load, safety factor and test verification are formulated for different grades. Third, upgrade the seismic design requirements of elevator structures, refine the seismic design guidelines for elevator hoistways, guide rails, cars, counterweights, suspension devices and supporting structures, and clarify the calculation methods and design requirements for structural strength, stiffness and stability under different working conditions. Fourth, add special requirements for seismic resistance of elevator safety components, and formulate special standards for seismic performance test and type test for core safety components such as safety gears, speed governors, buffers, door lock devices and safety circuits, to ensure the reliable operation of safety components in earthquake scenarios. Fifth, add the requirements for elevator earthquake monitoring and emergency linkage, clarify the technical standards for the design, installation and linkage logic of the elevator earthquake monitoring system, and standardize the emergency disposal process of elevators after the earthquake early warning is triggered. Sixth, refine the requirements for seismic performance test and acceptance of elevators, formulate standardized specifications for laboratory test, on-site inspection and acceptance process of elevator seismic performance, and improve the qualification criteria for seismic design. Seventh, add the requirements for seismic upgrading of existing elevators, and formulate special technical specifications and acceptance criteria for seismic performance assessment and upgrading of in-use elevators. After its release, the standard will become a mandatory compliance basis for elevator seismic design in EU countries, comprehensively improving the seismic safety performance of elevators in earthquake-prone areas of the EU.
