On October 8, 2024, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the new version of the international standard ISO 8103-1:2024 Escalators and moving walks — Part 1: Safety requirements, replacing the old version of ISO 8103-1:2018, which is the core general safety rule in the field of manufacturing, installation and inspection of global escalators and moving walks. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, comprehensively reconstruct the safety protection system for escalators and moving walks, refine the full-scene safety protection requirements under normal operation, fault state and emergency conditions, and improve the design, test and verification guidelines of safety protection devices. Second, upgrade the safety requirements for steps and pedals, refine the mandatory standards for mechanical strength, anti-skid performance, gap control and fall protection of steps and pedals, add the performance requirements for step missing detection and pedal deformation monitoring, and greatly reduce the risk of step-related safety accidents. Third, add special safety requirements for handrail systems, clarify the mandatory standards for running speed synchronization, anti-skid performance, fracture protection and monitoring systems of handrails, and standardize the design and test requirements of handrail inlet protection devices. Fourth, upgrade the anti-pinch and anti-entanglement safety requirements, refine the anti-pinch and anti-entanglement protection design standards for skirt panels, comb plates, inner and outer cover plates, and truss surroundings, and add the technical requirements for intelligent anti-pinch monitoring systems. Fifth, add the functional safety requirements for escalators and moving walks, clarify the safety integrity level (SIL) requirements of electronic safety systems and intelligent monitoring systems, and standardize the redundant design, fault monitoring and type test process of electronic safety components. Sixth, add network security and data security requirements, and formulate technical standards for network security protection, data encryption and access control for the control system and Internet of Things system of intelligent escalators. Seventh, refine the whole process specification of installation and acceptance, clarify the standardized process of quality control, on-site inspection, load test and safety verification during the installation process, and improve the qualification criteria for delivery and use. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national standard by more than 100 countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, realizing the coordination and unification of global safety standards for escalators and moving walks.
