On March 25, 2026, the CEN/TC 10 Technical Committee of the European Committee for Standardization officially issued the new EU standard EN 81-50:2026 Safety components for lifts — Design rules, calculations, verifications and tests, replacing the old 2014 version, which will officially take effect throughout the EU on September 25, 2026, and is the core compliance basis for the market access of elevator safety components in the EU. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, fully align with the international standard ISO 8100-2:2026, realize the coordination and unification of EU elevator safety component standards with global core standards, and eliminate technical trade barriers between the EU and the global market. Second, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering all elevator safety components such as speed governors, safety gears, buffers, door lock devices, guide rails, suspension devices, electronic safety components, and non-wire rope suspension systems, adapting to the safety component needs of all types of elevators such as machine-room-less elevators, home elevators, explosion-proof elevators, and fire-fighting elevators. Third, refine the design and calculation rules of safety components, formulate accurate calculation methods and design guidelines for component load, stress distribution, fatigue life and safety factor under different working conditions, and clarify the minimum safety factor requirements under different use scenarios. Fourth, upgrade the verification and test requirements of safety components, formulate the standardized process, test methods and qualification criteria for component type test, factory inspection and on-site test, and add special test standards for electronic safety components, carbon fiber components and non-wire rope suspension devices. Fifth, add the whole life cycle durability requirements of safety components, clarify the life evaluation method, fatigue test standard, maintenance cycle and scrap criteria of core safety components, to ensure the safety performance of elevator safety components in the whole life cycle. Sixth, add the traceability requirements of safety components, and clarify the whole process traceability management requirements for the unique identification code, production information, test report and use record of safety components. Seventh, standardize the document and identification requirements of safety components, clarify the preparation requirements for component design documents, calculation sheets, test reports and operation manuals, and unify the marking guidelines for component identification and model coding. After its release, the standard will become a mandatory compliance basis for the market access of elevator safety components in EU countries.
