ISO Issued New Version of ISO 8100-1:2026 Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts International Standard
On March 10, 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the new version of the international standard ISO 8100-1:2026 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 1: Safety rules for the construction and installation of passenger and goods passenger lifts, replacing the old version of ISO 8100-1:2019, which is the core general safety rule in the field of global elevator manufacturing and installation. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, comprehensively reconstruct the elevator safety protection system, refine the full-scene safety protection requirements under normal operation, fault state and emergency conditions of the elevator, and improve the design, test and verification guidelines of safety protection devices. Second, add special safety requirements for non-wire rope suspension devices, and formulate mandatory standards for complete design, fatigue test, life evaluation, installation and acceptance for new suspension systems such as carbon fiber composite core ropes and coated belts, filling the gap in international standards for new suspension technologies. Third, add special requirements for electronic safety systems and functional safety, clarify the safety integrity level (SIL) requirements of electronic speed governors, electronic safety gears, and intelligent safety monitoring systems, and standardize the redundant design, fault monitoring, and type test process of electronic safety components. Fourth, add elevator network security and data security requirements, and formulate technical standards for network security protection, data encryption, access control, and intrusion detection for intelligent elevator control systems, Internet of Things systems, and remote monitoring systems, to prevent network attacks and data leakage risks of intelligent elevators. Fifth, upgrade the safety requirements of the elevator door system, refine the mandatory standards for anti-pinch protection, mechanical strength, fault monitoring and emergency unlocking of the door system, add the performance requirements for obstacle detection of the door system, and greatly reduce the risk of safety accidents in the elevator door system. Sixth, optimize the relevant requirements of elevator seismic resistance, fire protection and barrier-free design, and achieve coordination and unification with the latest global building safety, fire protection and barrier-free design standards. Seventh, refine the whole process specification of elevator installation and acceptance, clarify the standardized process of quality control, on-site inspection, performance test and safety verification during the installation process, and improve the qualification criteria for elevator delivery and use. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national standard by more than 100 countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China, the United States and Japan, realizing the coordination and unification of global elevator safety standards.
