US Issued New Version of ASME A17.1-2025 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
On June 20, 2025, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued the new version of ASME A17.1-2025 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, replacing the old 2022 version, which will officially take effect in North America on January 1, 2026. It is the core safety specification for the elevator industry in North American countries such as the United States, Canada and Mexico. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, add special safety requirements for non-wire rope suspension devices, and formulate complete design, test, inspection and life evaluation standards for new technologies such as coated belts and carbon fiber composite suspension systems, filling the technical gap in North American standards. Second, upgrade the safety requirements of the elevator door system, refine the mandatory standards for anti-pinch protection, mechanical strength and fault monitoring of the door system, add the performance requirements for obstacle detection of the door system, and improve the safety of passengers taking the elevator. Third, add technical specifications for elevator remote monitoring and emergency rescue, clarify the mandatory requirements for the design, data transmission and emergency response of the elevator remote monitoring system, and standardize the safety guidelines for remote leveling and remote fault diagnosis. Fourth, upgrade the seismic design requirements of elevators, refine the mandatory standards for seismic design, testing and acceptance of elevators for earthquake-prone areas in North America, and improve the safety performance of elevators in earthquake scenarios. Fifth, add the requirements for age-friendly and barrier-free design of elevators, refine the barrier-free design specifications of elevators in public buildings, and adapt to the development trend of population aging in North America. Sixth, optimize the elevator maintenance and inspection requirements, refine the standardized process of elevator maintenance items, inspection cycles and inspection methods, and strengthen the skill requirements of maintenance personnel. Seventh, add elevator network security requirements, standardize the technical standards for network security protection, data encryption and access control of elevator control systems, to prevent the risk of network attacks on intelligent elevators. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a mandatory safety specification by North American countries such as the United States, Canada and Mexico.
