EU Issued 2025 Version of European Standard for Age-Friendly Design of Elevators
On June 18, 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) officially issued the revised European standard EN 81-70:2025 Accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability, adding special requirements for age-friendly design of elevators, which will be officially implemented on December 1, 2025. The core upgrades of this revision for the age-friendly design of elevators include: First, it refines the general requirements for the age-friendly design of elevators, and formulates special design standards according to the physical function characteristics and usage habits of the elderly, covering the whole process of car layout, operation interface, sound and light prompts, and emergency rescue. Second, it upgrades the age-friendly design specifications of the elevator car, clarifies the mandatory standards for the minimum net size of the car, handrail configuration, ground anti-skid, and lighting brightness, requiring that double-sided handrails must be installed in the car, and the height of the handrails adapts to the use needs of the elderly. Third, it standardizes the age-friendly design requirements of the elevator operation interface, clarifies the mandatory standards for button size, font size, color contrast, and voice prompts, requiring that the button diameter is not less than 35mm, the font height is not less than 5mm, and equipped with high-contrast visual signs and clear voice prompts. Fourth, it adds the age-friendly design requirements of the elevator landing hall, and clarifies the mandatory standards for the minimum size of the landing hall, the layout of the call buttons, and the sound and light prompts. Fifth, it standardizes the requirements for intelligent age-friendly functions of elevators, and formulates design and test standards for intelligent age-friendly functions such as face recognition, voice control, one-key call, and remote assistance. Sixth, it clarifies the technical requirements and acceptance standards for age-friendly transformation of existing elevators, providing a unified technical guideline for age-friendly transformation projects of existing elevators in EU countries. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national mandatory standard by all 27 EU member states, comprehensively improving the level of age-friendly elevator construction in the EU region.
