On May 12, 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) officially issued the European standard EN 81-70:2025 Accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability, replacing the old 2008 version, which will be officially implemented on November 1, 2025. This standard is the core mandatory standard for barrier-free design of elevators in the European Union. The core contents of this revision include: First, it refines the general requirements for barrier-free design of elevators, and formulates differentiated barrier-free design standards for different user groups such as the disabled, the elderly, pregnant women, and children. Second, it upgrades the barrier-free design specifications of elevator cars, and clarifies the mandatory technical requirements for the minimum car size, operation panel layout, button size and spacing, Braille signs, and voice announcement. Third, it standardizes the barrier-free design requirements of elevator landing halls and entrances, and clarifies the mandatory standards for the minimum size of landing halls, landing door opening width, barrier-free signs, and sound and light prompts. Fourth, it adds the requirements for intelligent barrier-free functions of elevators, and standardizes the design and test standards of intelligent barrier-free functions such as voice control, face recognition, and remote assistance. Fifth, it clarifies the technical requirements and acceptance standards for barrier-free transformation of existing elevators, providing a unified technical guideline for barrier-free transformation projects of existing elevators in EU countries. After its release, the standard has been adopted as a national mandatory standard by all 27 EU member states, which will comprehensively improve the level of elevator barrier-free construction in the EU region.
