On June 18, 2025, Standards Australia, in collaboration with Standards New Zealand, officially released the AS/NZS 1428.1:2025 standard titled "Barrier-Free Design of Buildings - Part 1: General Requirements". This standard comprehensively regulates and upgrades the barrier-free design requirements for elevators, replacing the old 2009 standard and is set to be officially implemented on January 1, 2026. As the core mandatory standard for barrier-free design of buildings in the Australia-New Zealand region, this standard encompasses the following key aspects specific to the elevator sector: Firstly, it clarifies the general requirements for barrier-free elevator design, standardizing the configuration of barrier-free facilities for elevators in public and residential buildings. Secondly, it refines the specifications for barrier-free elevator car design, specifying mandatory standards for the minimum size of the car, the height of the operation panel, the size and spacing of buttons, and braille signage. Thirdly, it upgrades the functional requirements for barrier-free elevators, defining design standards for voice announcement systems, audible and visual cues, and emergency call systems. Fourthly, it standardizes the barrier-free design requirements for elevator entrances and exits, specifying mandatory standards for the width of landing door openings, the size of elevator lobbies, and barrier-free signage. Fifthly, it clarifies the technical requirements and acceptance standards for the barrier-free retrofitting of existing elevators, mandating that public buildings complete the barrier-free retrofitting of their existing elevators by 2030.
