China Elevator Association Issued New Version of Group Standard T/CEA 0051-2025 Elevator Counterweight Blocks
On June 27, 2025, the China Elevator Association officially issued the new version of group standard T/CEA 0051-2025 Elevator Counterweight Blocks, replacing the old 2020 version, which will be officially implemented on October 1, 2025. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, completely ban ore powder counterweight blocks, clarifying that from October 1, 2025, the use of ore powder filled counterweight blocks is completely prohibited for newly delivered elevators, and the replacement and transformation of ore powder counterweight blocks in existing elevators will be completed before 2028, fundamentally solving the potential safety hazards of insufficient strength, easy corrosion and easy cracking of ore powder counterweight blocks. Second, clarify the mandatory requirements for counterweight block materials, stipulating that elevator counterweight blocks must use high-strength and high-stability materials such as cast iron, high-density concrete, and steel, the specific gravity of the materials shall not be less than 4.5t/m³, and must pass 2 million fatigue tests and impact resistance tests. Third, refine the safety requirements for the structural design of counterweight blocks, and formulate special design guidelines and strength requirements for the overall dimensions, fixing methods, anti-falling devices, and counterweight adjustment structure of counterweight blocks, to ensure that the counterweight blocks are firmly installed and operate stably. Fourth, upgrade the performance test requirements for counterweight blocks, formulate the test methods and qualification criteria for mechanical strength, impact resistance, fatigue life, corrosion resistance, and environmental adaptability of counterweight blocks, and add the long-term vibration stability test requirements for counterweight blocks. Fifth, standardize the installation and acceptance requirements for counterweight blocks, clarify the standardized specifications for the installation process, fixing method, on-site inspection, and load test of counterweight blocks, and improve the qualification criteria. Sixth, refine the maintenance and replacement requirements for counterweight blocks, formulate standardized specifications for daily inspection, regular inspection, wear detection, and replacement criteria of counterweight blocks, and clarify the replacement time limit and transformation requirements for existing ore powder counterweight blocks. After its release, this standard has been adopted by the Chinese market supervision department as the technical reference basis for elevator safety supervision. It is expected that after implementation, it can reduce more than 30% of elevator safety accidents caused by counterweight system failures, and comprehensively improve the safety performance and quality level of elevator counterweight blocks in China.
