ISO 8100-1/2:2026 Global Core Elevator Safety Standards Officially Released, Implemented in March 2026
On March 26, 2026, ISO/TC 178 officially issued ISO 8100-1:2026 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 1: Design and installation of lifts and ISO 8100-2:2026 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 2: Design rules, calculations, verifications and tests of lift components, two core standards. The standards are global unified elevator safety benchmarks, EU synchronously converted to EN ISO 8100-1/2:2026, replacing EN 81-20/50 by end of 2028. Core updates: First, global unified specifications, integrating standard differences between US, Europe, Asia, unifying safety requirements, test methods, qualification judgment, realizing global standard mutual recognition; Second, new suspension devices, adding design, strength, test standards for non-wire rope suspension devices such as carbon fiber composite belts, non-metallic ropes, supporting ultra-light, high-speed elevators; Third, electronic safety systems, introducing SIL safety level circuits, replacing traditional PESSRAL, digital control of electronic speed governors, safety gears, braking systems; Fourth, special chapter on cybersecurity, first inclusion of elevator cybersecurity requirements, standardizing data encryption, access control, vulnerability management, anti-hijacking; Fifth, door system safety, strengthening door protection, anti-pinch, anti-fall design, adding safety specifications for horizontally moving doors; Sixth, emergency functions, improving power failure automatic leveling, emergency rescue, backup power standards, emergency response time ≤ 0.1 seconds; Seventh, document system, reconstructing specifications for conformity declaration, risk analysis, operation manual. Standards issued in March 2026, effective in EU after 6 months, gradually replacing old standards worldwide, reshaping elevator industry technical system.
