On February 18, 2026, the CEN/TC 10 Technical Committee of the European Committee for Standardization officially issued the new EU standard EN 81-20:2026 Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts — Passenger and goods passenger lifts, replacing the old 2014 version, which will officially take effect throughout the EU on August 18, 2026. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, fully align with the international standard ISO 8100-1:2026, realize the coordination and unification of EU elevator safety standards with the global core standards, and eliminate technical trade barriers between the EU and the global market. Second, add special safety requirements for non-wire rope suspension devices, and formulate complete design, test, inspection and life evaluation standards for new suspension systems such as carbon fiber composite core ropes and coated belts, filling the gap in EU standards for new technologies. Third, add a complete technical specification for electronic safety components, clarifying the design requirements, redundant design guidelines, fault monitoring mechanism and type test process of electronic speed governors, electronic safety gears, and intelligent safety monitoring systems. Fourth, add special requirements for network security of elevator control systems, standardize the technical standards for network security protection, data encryption, access control, and intrusion detection of elevator electrical systems, to prevent the risk of network attacks on intelligent elevators. Fifth, upgrade the safety requirements of the elevator door system, refine the mandatory standards for anti-pinch protection, mechanical strength, fault monitoring, and emergency unlocking of the door system, and improve the safety of passengers taking the elevator. Sixth, optimize the relevant requirements of elevator seismic resistance, fire protection and barrier-free design, and achieve coordination and unification with the latest EU building safety and barrier-free design regulations. Seventh, refine the whole process specification of elevator installation and acceptance, and clarify the standardized process of quality control, on-site inspection and performance test during installation. After its release, the standard will become the core compliance basis for the market access of elevator products in EU countries.
