ASME A17.1-2025/CSA B44-25 is the mandatory safety standard for the elevator industry in North America, applicable to both the United States and Canada. The main contents of this revision include:
1) In response to the risk of falls from the sides of escalators and moving walks, requiring equipment installed in open atriums to increase the height of fall protection barriers or install safety nets;
2) Updated elevator seismic design requirements, adopting the latest ground motion parameters;
3) Strengthened requirements for emergency responder radio coverage equipment in elevators;
4) Revised technical specifications for elastomeric buffers;
5) Improved lighting standards for elevator shafts and machine rooms.
The standard applies to newly installed elevators and escalators after February 2026, and retrofit requirements for existing equipment are determined by individual states and provinces.
