On January 16, 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the international standard ISO 8100-7:2026 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 7: Accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability, which is the core unified guideline for accessibility design of elevators worldwide. The core upgrade contents of this standard revision include: First, expand the scope of application of the standard, covering various elevator types such as passenger elevators, home elevators, medical elevators, and special barrier-free elevators, and clarifying that all newly installed elevators in public buildings must meet the requirements of this standard. Second, refine the special design requirements for different disabled groups, and formulate differentiated barrier-free design standards according to the use needs of different disabled groups such as visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical impairment, and cognitive impairment, to achieve full population coverage. Third, upgrade the barrier-free design specifications of the elevator car, clarify the mandatory standards for the minimum net size of the car, wheelchair turning space, handrail configuration, ground anti-skid, and lighting brightness, requiring that the car must be equipped with high and low double-sided handrails and a special parking area for wheelchairs. Fourth, standardize the barrier-free design requirements of the elevator operation interface, clarify the mandatory standards for Braille buttons, voice prompts, visual signs, and tactile feedback, requiring that the buttons are equipped with raised Braille, high-contrast visual signs, and full-process voice announcement and operation prompts. Fifth, add the specification of intelligent barrier-free functions of elevators, and formulate design and test standards for intelligent barrier-free functions such as face recognition, voice control, remote assistance, and one-key call. Sixth, clarify the technical requirements and acceptance standards for barrier-free transformation of existing elevators, providing a unified technical guideline for barrier-free transformation projects of existing elevators around the world.
