On October 21, 2024, Standards Australia, together with Standards New Zealand, officially issued the 2024 version of the AS/NZS 1735 series Safety Code for Elevators, Escalators and Moving Walks, replacing the old 2017 version that has been used for 7 years, which is the core mandatory technical standard for market access of elevator products in Australia and New Zealand. The core contents of this standard revision include: First, achieve full integration with the ISO 8100 international elevator standard, unify the technical requirements of the Australia-New Zealand region and the global mainstream elevator standards, and reduce technical barriers to cross-border trade. Second, add network security and data protection requirements for intelligent elevators, clarify the design, testing and operation and maintenance safety specifications of elevator intelligent systems, and prevent the risk of network attacks and data leakage. Third, upgrade the green energy-saving technical requirements of elevators, add the elevator energy efficiency rating standard, and clarify the energy-saving design and operation requirements of elevators in different scenarios. Fourth, strengthen the seismic design specifications of elevators, and refine the mandatory technical requirements for seismic design, installation and inspection of elevators in view of the geological characteristics of frequent earthquakes in Australia and New Zealand. Fifth, add technical specifications for the upgrading of existing elevators, and clarify the design and acceptance standards for safety upgrading and barrier-free transformation of old elevators. The standard officially took effect on April 21, 2025, and the original 2017 version of the standard has an 18-month transition period, during which the standard conversion and product compliance rectification will be completed.
