In February 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee for Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the international standard ISO/TS 8102-21:2026 Electrical requirements for lifts, escalators and moving walks — Part 21: On-site and off-site software updates, which is the world's first special technical specification for the whole life cycle update management of elevator software. The core contents of the standard include: first, clarifying the whole-process control requirements for on-site and remote update of elevator software, covering the whole process of risk assessment, version verification and authority management before update, power-off protection and fault rollback during update, function test and record archiving after update; second, standardizing the network security requirements for remote software update, clarifying the mandatory standards for data encryption, identity authentication and access control, to prevent the risk of network attacks during remote update; third, clarifying the document management requirements for software updates, requiring manufacturers to retain the update records and test reports of all software versions for at least 10 years, to realize the traceability of the whole life cycle of software versions; fourth, clarifying the safety verification process after update, requiring that the safety function test must be completed after the software update to ensure that the safety performance of the elevator is not lower than the level before update. This standard is applicable to all newly installed and in-use intelligent elevators, escalators and moving walks, and provides a unified technical guideline for software update management in the global elevator industry.
