China Issued National Standard for Safety Assessment of In-use Escalators
On October 26, 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China officially issued the national standard GB/T 44843-2024 Specifications for safety estimation of existing escalators and moving walks, which was officially implemented on the day of issuance. This standard is the first special national standard for safety assessment of in-use escalators and moving walks in China. The core contents include: First, it clarifies the applicable scope, assessment cycle, assessment process and judgment standards for safety assessment of in-use escalators and moving walks, which is applicable to all in-use escalators and moving walks that have been put into use for more than 1 year. Second, it refines the core items of safety assessment, covering 6 dimensions including equipment body safety, electrical control system, safety protection device, structural strength, operation performance, maintenance records and file management, with a total of 128 assessment indicators. Third, it standardizes the methods and technical requirements of safety assessment, clarifies the operation specifications of on-site inspection, performance test, data analysis and risk classification, and divides safety risks into four levels: major risk, relatively large risk, general risk and low risk. Fourth, it clarifies the disposal requirements for different risk levels. Equipment with major risks must be shut down for rectification immediately, and can only continue to be used after passing the rectification. Fifth, it standardizes the preparation requirements of the safety assessment report, clarifies the content, format and archiving requirements of the report, and the assessment report must be kept for at least 5 years. The release of this standard provides a unified technical specification for the safety assessment of in-use escalators and moving walks in China, and helps to improve the safe operation level of in-use escalator equipment.
