On April 10, 2026, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) officially approved and released ASME A17.1-2026 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. As the core safety benchmark for the US elevator industry, this standard replaces the 2022 edition and will take effect nationwide in the US on October 1, 2026. Core updates of the standard: First, strengthened accessibility design, adding requirements for elevator voice announcement, braille buttons, and wheelchair safety space dimensions. Public building elevators must meet 100% accessibility design requirements, and stock renovation must be completed by 2028; Second, cybersecurity inclusion, clearly defining cybersecurity requirements for smart elevators for the first time, including data encryption, firewall configuration, and anti-hacker attack measures, in line with the EU CRA Act; Third, old elevator assessment, adding the safety assessment process and judgment standards for elevators used for more than 15 years. Elevators that fail the assessment must be rectified or scrapped within a time limit; Fourth, updated test methods, optimizing the test methods for traction systems, safety devices, and door systems, and adding AI visual detection and remote monitoring data validity tests; Fifth, document requirements, elevator installation, maintenance, and renovation documents must be electronically archived for easy access by regulatory authorities. After the implementation of the standard, US elevator safety supervision will be further aligned with international mainstream standards, improving the overall safety level of the industry.
