The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) released the Australian Building Code - Special Revision for Elevator Fire Protection on November 10, 2024, which formulates a unified national mandatory standard for the safe operation and protection of elevators in fire scenarios. The new regulation clarifies that all elevators in new buildings must be equipped with an automatic fire alarm linkage system, which can automatically switch to fire operation mode and stop at the designated evacuation floor when a fire occurs; at the same time, it requires that elevator hoistways and machine rooms must be equipped with special fireproof sealing and fire extinguishing devices, and the car must be equipped with emergency lighting and fire emergency call systems. For the first time, the new regulation clarifies the design and operation standards for firefighters' special elevators. The revision was officially incorporated into the Australian National Building Code on January 1, 2025, and is enforced nationwide. Existing buildings must complete compliance transformation before the end of 2027.
